Celebrity Stylist Rosie McKay’s Top Formal & Prom Tips

By White Runway, August 2, 2018

White Runway hosted their annual School Formal Styling Workshop in July 2018 and had the pleasure of featuring celebrity stylist Rosie McKay who gave her top formal styling tips to ensure you look amazing on your formal night!

  1. Choose a dress that flatters your shape

Finding a dress that flatters your shape is probably the most important factor when it comes to choosing  a dress for your formal. If you feel comfortable you will radiate confidence.
If you’re narrower through your top half and curvier on the bottom, consider going for a style that cinches at the waist and has an A-line skirt. If you have more or an hourglass figure, a fitted style will highlight your curves beautifully. Not keen on showing off your arms? Then go for a dress with sleeves and maybe an off-the-shoulder neckline.

  2. Wear a colour that complements your skin tone

As a rule of thumb those with fair complexion look better in bold or jewel-coloured tones like emerald, red, navy, black and mauve to name a few. More olive or darker complexions look can wear most colours and tend to really shine in lighter shades like pastel pinks, lilac, powder blue and white. When shopping for your dress, try on a range of styles in different colours as this will help you work out what looks best.

  3. Choose appropriate footwear

You want to be able to dance the night away on your formal night, so choosing footwear you can walk in is a must. If you have trouble walking in stilettos don’t wear them! Go for a block heel or wedge instead. If you want to wear stilettos make sure you buy a height that feels comfortable to walk in and make sure you break them in by wearing them a few times before your big night too!

  4. Accessorise

Accessories add the finishing touch to your look. If you have a simple dress you can afford to add a statement piece. Depending on what style of neckline you have you could either choose a bold earring, necklace or cuff to really amp up your formal style.

  5. Wear the right underwear

A VPL (visible panty line) is a big no, no! You want to have smooth lines under dress especially if you are wearing a fitted style. I advise that you take the a range of underwear including shapewear with you when you go formal dress shopping. The right underwear can really make or break how you feel about a dress. If you are thinking of choosing a strapless dress, make sure you take a strapless bra with you when shopping to ensure you get a good idea of how it will fit on the bust area. Nothing worse than walking around pulling your dress up all night.
